One of the most frequently visited cities Mysore, is the second largest city of Karnataka. Only 130 km away from Bangalore, the name Mysore is an adapted version of Mahishur, meaning The Home of Mahishasura, a demon from the Hindu mythology. Located 770m above sea level, this picturesque city was previously the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore, ruled by the Wodeyar dynasty, except for a brief period in the late 18th century when Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan took the power.

Rich in lakes in and around Mysore, such as Karanji Lake, Kukkaranahalli Lake and Lingabudi Lake, the tourists can spend their time in boating and bird watching there.

Mysore is known for its exotic carved sandalwood, pure silk saris and incense, and the delicious Indian Sweet “Mysore Paak”, all around the world. It is always suggested to buy Sandal Powder, Sandal Oil and Scented Incense Sticks from the Government Sandalwood Oil Factory, and the shimmering silk saris from the Government Silk Factory. You can also buy these items from Cauvery Handicrafts Emporium or directly from the little back streets and lanes, but they need some exiting bargains.
Mysore has a warm, cool and healthy climate all the year round. The weather in winter is cool and the summers are bearable. During rainy season, Mysore gets heavy rains, and so the best time to visit Mysore is from September to April. Mysore is well connected to almost all of the major cities of India, by air, road and rail.
By Road, The state highway connecting Mysore and Bangalore is very well maintained, and takes about 3hrs. The Karnataka Road Transport Corporation has excellent bus service to Mysore. One can find ordinary buses, semi-luxury buses and luxury buses operated by the Government of Karnataka, every half an hour.
By Train, Mysore is well connected with a number of trains to Bangalore. One of the super fast luxury trains is the Shatabdi Express, running between Mysore and Madras. The best way to reach Mysore is via Bangalore.
By Air, Mysore does not have a functional airport and the nearest functional airport to the city is the Bengaluru International Airport at Bangalore (139 km). |
