Mysore Excursions.jpg The city of Mysore, Karnataka is rich in culture, heritage and sightseeing attractions; and thus is able to captivate numerous tourists. The moderate climate existing here also plays a key role in attracting visitors. These tourist destinations show a fine blend of tradition and modernity. Besides the attractions in Mysore; one can find numerous places of excursions around Mysore. These spots are quite close to Mysore and may be seen as a one day excursion. Some of the best places of excursions in Mysore are:

Bandipur National Park, on the Mysore-Ooty highway in Karnataka, is situated 80 km from Mysore. One of India's biggest biosphere reserve, it is popularly known as the 'Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve'. It is an open forest and provides opportunities for viewing wildlife from elephant back. It is an ideal place for sightseeing, spending your holiday and indulging in wildlife safari.

Talakad, on the banks of river Cauvery, Talakad is popular for its sand dunes. There are various temples buried under the sand dunes, and are excavated once in 12 years for special worship.

Shravanabelagola, known for the monolith of Bahubali or Gommateshwara, are two stony hills called Chandragiri and Indragiri. Chandragiri is famous for the Chandragupta Basadi built by the Gangas, while Indragiri is famous for the Chavendaraya Basadi and the gigantic statue of Gommateshwara.

Srirangapatnam, located 15 km from Mysore, is the island fortress of Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan. It is also known for the Ranganathaswamy Temple and a mosque depicting the fierce battle of Tipu's last stand against the British. One can also visit the Daria Daulat Bagh, the lush green garden, which was the summer palace of Tipu Sultan, and had a fine collection of paintings, manuscripts and Tipu memorabilia.

Shivasamudram Falls, the second biggest waterfall in India and the sixteenth largest in the world, is located 85 km to the east of Mysore. This segmented waterfall, occurs where the river Cauvery is divided into two separate falls - the western falls known as Gaganachukki and the eastern falls, Bharachukki. The sight of these two falls is enchanting and the best time to visit them is during the monsoon.
